Bundaberg
Bundaberg may not be on the typical tourist trail, but the town has plenty to offer.
It’s know as the “Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef,” and marks the southern tip of the famous reef structure.
Although it sits inland on the Burnett River, which winds its way out to the ocean, the town is just a short drive from the coast’s clean and stinger-free beaches that lead out to the reef.
To get to the reef you can either take a cruise down river and out into the legendary waters or simply drive to the beaches yourself.
There are plenty of opportunities for multiple or single day diving and snorkelling trips and this is an ideal spot to get either your first or final glance of the reef.
As well as having one of the world’s natural marvels on its doorstep, Bundy also has the famous Mon Repos Turtle Rookery nearby.
From November until the end of March, the small beach at Mon Repos sees hundreds of turtles return to its sands, and a night trip is an amazing experience.
Bundaberg is, of course, famous for its rum and no trip to the town would be complete without a trip to the distillery.
Handy Tip:
If you are seeking fruit-picking work, May, June and July are the quiet months.
