Extreme Queensland
Queensland’s laid back nature is turned on its head by the fantastic array of extreme sports on offer.
With its incredibly diverse terrain, there are very few extreme activities that Queensland does not provide. The vast rainforests and jungles in north Queensland offers activities that are unique. For example, the Minjin Jungle Swing in Cairns gives you the chance to be winched up to 45 metres high where you get a fabulous view of the Great Barrier Reef and Yorkes Knob. Either on your own, or with two friends, allow yourself to swing over rainforest in an arching pendulum until gravity stops you.
Another way to experience north Queensland’s tropical rainforests is the Jungle Surfer. Set in Cape Tribulation, just north of Cairns, you can fly from tree to tree on flying fox ziplines. As well as being a fantastic adrenaline rush, you will get to learn about the beautiful rainforest, with trained abseilers and scientist guides joining you.
Staying in north Queensland, the white water rafting on the Tully and Barron rivers allows you to raft on up to Grade 4 rapids, perfect for both beginners and those more experienced. And, of course, there is the relatively ancient custom of bungy jumping, which can be done in numerous locations around the region.
Further south, if you are looking for something completely different, or are hankering for the snowboarding season, try a sandboarding tour in North Stradbroke Island, near Brisbane. Travelling in a 4WD along excellent off road terrain, you are taken to the top of a naturally formed sand bowl that provides great views of the ocean. After waxing your board and trying out the beginners’ slope, how you get down the steeper slopes is entirely up to you.
Finally, those that have not heard of zorbing have been missing out. Rolling down a hill in a huge PVC ball with your friends while accompanied by 40 litres of water, this is an experience you will never forget.
