Though Fraser Island can be accessed via Rainbow Beach further south, Hervey Bay is a far more popular starting point for those looking to spend time on Fraser.
Its main attraction may be the famous island that sits just off its shore, but Hervey Bay is actually a top tourist destination in its own right.
Hervey boasts a great nightlife, plenty of accommodation, and some top beaches.
It’s also recognised as the whale watch capital of the world, with the humpback whales taking to the waters around the town from July to early November each year.
Lying just off the south Queensland coastline this is the world’s largest sand island, and is a truly unique phenomenon.
Stretching over 123 kilometres, Fraser is a spectacular blend of massive sand dunes, thick rainforest and around 200 lakes, streams and waterway. This is the ideal spot for your Kodak moments.
The island can be accessed by ferry from either Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay, although the latter route is far more popular and offers more as a resort.
The majority of those taking a trip to Fraser will opt to do a self drive 4WD trip. There are plenty of companies offering a variety of different trips, so make sure you shop around to find the deal that suits you.
These types of trip involve stocking up with food and drink supplies on the mainland and then being let loose on the island with your 4WD in a group of about ten people for around three days. You drive through the thick forests and along the beaches to all the top destinations and camp out in the dunes at night, where the dingoes will more than likely pay you a visit.
For those with less time there are organised day trips and those for who don’t like the prospect of camping, the island does have its own resort and accommodation.
As you look out from Indian Heads over the ocean, you’re sure to see some amazing wildlife such as sharks, dolphins, manta rays, and turtles.
There are some of the best natural beauty destinations you are likely to see and you may not be able to fit them all in. However, Lake Wobby and Lake Mackenzie, with their white sands and crystal fresh waters are locations everyone needs to fit into their trip.
