Sydney Weekenders
Sydney is blessed with a number of fantastic locations that lie just a short journey away from the CBD.
Whether city life is getting too much to bear or you just fancy a few days away in the sun, there are a wide range of attractions just on the city’s doorstep, ideal for a weekend getaway.
Blue Mountains
Easily accessible by train, car or bus the Blue Mountains are two hours to the west of Sydney and are in stark contrast to the city.
The mountains get their name from the haze that the gum trees emit during the morning.
There’s plenty of fantastic scenery to take in, including the famous Three Sisters rock formation, and heaps of different bushwalks and treks into the heart of the mountains.
The Jenolan Caves are one of the most popular attractions in the mountains, with their series of underground rivers and rock formations.
Hunter Valley
Quite possibly the most well-known winemaking region in the country, the Hunter Valley lies just a two hour drive north of Sydney.
Buses leave from Sydney daily – it is very difficult to travel there by train.
Once in the valley, you can take an organised wine tour that are usually put on by hotels and hostels, or simply drive from vineyard to vineyard yourself if you have transport.
With around 140 wineries in the area, including about 50 in the popular Lower Hunter region, there are plenty to choose from and famous names such as Drayton’s and Lindemans will happily open their cellar doors to you.
There is plenty of cheap accommodation in and around the town of Cessnock in the Lower Hunter, which is an excellent region to stay in – being close to the majority of the major wineries.
Central Coast
Just a short trip North of Sydney, the central coast offers outstanding natural beauty and award-winning attractions with an array of activities, food, drink and accommodation for every taste.
From swimming to shopping, golf to gardens, hiking to horse riding and koalas to kangaroos the Central Coast provides a wide range of memorable experiences.
The region is home to national parks, forests and reserves protecting native wilderness, Aboriginal heritage and pristine waterways.
The sheer beauty of this spectacular coastal region is also showcased by a series of stunning beaches.
And if dry land isn’t for you, fans of water sports will revel in the abundance of boating, fishing, surfing, scuba diving and water skiing.
